  1. Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

I'm attemping buy this old Montgomery Ward AC 295 arc welder, My question is: Is this a good welder to weld 3/4 Inch sheet metal ?

  2. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

I've owned one of those before. It welded very good.

It will weld 3/4" thick just fine in my opinion.

  3. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

honestly with stick even a 140 amp HF caddy will weld 3/4 inch plate with 1/8th rods and multiple passes, the great thing about stick is that you don't actually need a big machine to weld thick metal, you just need more runs.

  4. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

I don't know if I would call 3/4" thick steel "sheet metal" Most of the time I hear it called "plate" Maybe in TTOKS shop its considered thin material(19mm?). I'm sure that machine would run 3/16" 7014 on AC real nice. it should be a good machine for steel. All you'll need is a 240v 50amp outlet to plug into and some 6011,6013, and some 7014. Goes down to 25 amps, should be able to run that 1/16" rod with that. How much do they want for it ?
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

A friend gave me one of those and I still use it occasionally. It welds great for AC. Does the one you are looking at come with the leads? That will be an extra expense to consider if not. It has an old socket style connection that you will need to source.

According with the seller, this welder was used just two times and saved for a long time. is in prestine condition and comes with leads, he said its just dust but everything is like new
I will see it tomorrow and post an extra pics.

  8. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

I saw a never before used Lincoln 225 on craigslist that had an aftermarket ground clamp on it. ????
That welder looks to be in great condition, but isn't there supposed to be a handle on the release/lock slide?

The release "clutch" is the lever on the right side of the machine.

  10. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

They work great I own one. Solid unit 100% duty cycle up to 130~ amps then 20% from there on. However like any buzz that's more of a guide line than a hard rule. Aluminium wound transformer. The lugs do not go all the way into the machine and aren't meant to. The socket taper is steep on them and leaves about a half inch sticking out. If the release lever doesn't move don't worry about it. It has a couple nuts to adjust how tight it is on the machine and can be taken apart and greased. Just offer them $50 if it doesn't move.

Yea but it looks like a little nub. Maybe that is how it is supposed to be, not sure. I've seen Centurys and Craftsmans that have a good size handle sticking out to grab.

  13. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

    Awesome. Go try it out.

Welding on the "low" side will have a higher open circuit voltage than the "high" side.

  14. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

I try it out using 6013 ac electrodes and works awesome, even 7018, but i didnt succeed with 6011 3/32" and 1/8" ac electrodes, it just sticked and doesn't stared, i set up at 90 amps and 130 amps and 150 amps
    any sugestion for 6011 ?
    Thanks

  15. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

6011 use less amperage than the other rods (6010 is similar but for DC).

Running flat, 80-100 amps on 1/8" 6011 is about right. 110-125 amps for vertical down works good for me.

If amps are proper and still sticking, strike with more authority.

Try this video to see some of the motions used for 6010/6011.

You noted in post #12 6 years or so ago, I was having lotsa trouble getting 6011 to light up. Lots of sticking. Once I got a puddle going it would work, but not the best. I attributed that to my ineptitude and/or bad rod. After welding one day and putting stuff away, I noticed the plugs for the work and electrode leads were hot. The ends of the wires had been tinned before tightening the screws into the plugs. That is a no no. The guy that did that (looks a lot like me) now knows better. I re-terminated the lead ends and now it works much better with the same batch of rod and the same operator. btw, this was a Thunderbolt AC/DC on DC.

I didn't try any other rod at the time. Probably didn't have any. Just giving you something to consider. Maybe check the connections to your leads. After 20 yrs, who knows. Good luck. And, nice looking welder.

    Tim

Do you still wear the jeans your Mom bought you? Wanting some more of them?

  18. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

If the jeans are in as good as shape as the welder, I'll take a pair of them. You did say she only bought a pair "once" so you must still have that pair.

  19. Re: Montgomery ward AC 295 amps Question ?

This is what happen when i use 6011 rods
I was searching online to see if somebody else has the same issue using 6011 ac rods.
This guy is using Lincoln 225 ac

Only issue I saw was one little stick at the beginning - which happens sometimes to everyone with various rods on AC and DC.
Plus the fact that while he's a heck of a nice guy, he's not a very good welder overall and his information is often slightly wrong.

For example, 7018AC is not just for AC welding - works on DC too.
